Expect a memorable, low-impact journey into the heart of Azerbaijan’s semi-desert wilderness, where you’ll connect with nature, observe wildlife at arm’s length, and meet hospitable local families. The tour includes up-close gazelle sightings, peaceful birdwatching, a warm welcome in a village home, and the chance to harvest fruit directly from the garden.
Shirvan National Park, established on July 5, 2003, is located in the Kura-Araz lowland, spanning parts of the Garadagh, Salyan, and Neftchala districts. It covers an area of 54,374 hectares, featuring semi-desert terrain, dry lakes, salt marshes, and coastal wetland habitats. The flora includes species like wormwood (Artemisia), saltbush (Salsola), tamarisk, halostachys, and various semi-arid grasses adapted to the steppe climate.
The park is internationally recognized for its role in protecting the Goitered Gazelle (Ceyran), with over 6,500 gazelles living freely across its protected zones — the largest concentration in the entire Caucasus region. In addition to gazelles, wildlife includes foxes, jackals, wild boars, hares, jungle cats, and numerous bird species, such as flamingos, herons, ducks, kestrels, eagles, and other migratory and native birds. The Bandovan mud volcanoes and the surrounding shallow lake areas create ideal conditions for birdwatching and nature photography.
The park’s biodiversity is actively supported through partnerships with WWF, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, and IDEA Public Union, and contributes to national rewilding programs by relocating gazelles to other regions of Azerbaijan.
This is a carbon-light, educational, and conservation-supportive experience that reflects Azerbaijan’s COP29 eco-tourism values, blending wildlife observation, environmental education, and cultural connection in one rewarding daytrip from Baku.
