History of Shamakhi

Shirvan Dynasty ruled Shirvan Empire from 9 th -16 th centuries, beginning in the 5th century BC. The Shirvan dynasty lived in Shamakhi in the late 18th century. It was the capital of Shirvan Khanate from the 11th to 12th centuries. Addy-Gyumbez's mausoleum (“Seven Domes”) is the last stronghold of Shirvan Dynasty, established to protect the city in the 11th and 12th centuries. The Djuma cathedral mosque (10th century, rebuilt in the 19 th century) is a popular place where Shirvan governors and other historical figures are buried. The ruins of the city are of interest to visitors, as they date from the 10th to 17th centuries.

There are buses from Sheki and Qabala to Baku via Shamakhi Bus Terminal. The cost is 6 manat from Sheki and 4 manat from Qabala. Buses from Baku are also available, for 4 manat.
